LATEST NEWS

New heating being installed - July 2022

New electric heating is being installed over the summer, in time to provide more consistent heating throughout the hall during the winter months.

New side access and fencing - February 2022

To improve access to the hall, we have opened the side hedge and installed new fencing, allowing pedestrians, wheelchairs and buggy’s to come into the hall from the footpath to Vicarage Mead.

Relaxation of Covid measures - July 2021

We are now back to near normal use of the hall. We will continue with extra cleaning and ask users to do their bit towards this. We will continue with paper towels and also provide a hand sanitizing station. Restrictions on numbers have been lifted.

Wifi - May 2021
We now have Wifi available in the hall.

Hall re-opening - Spring 2021

The hall will re-open for limited use from Spring 2021. We have put social distancing and hygiene measures in place to help hirers, who will also be required to do their own risk assessment. At the present time we are only taking bookings form regular hirers,  we won't be able to take bookings for one off party's or events at the moment.

Re-Decoration - August 2020

While the hall has been closed, because of the pandemic, we have taken the opportunity to re-decorate.  The hall now has a fresh new modern look and is clean and bright. We have also had the wooden sprung floor completely refurbished, which our dance classes will appreciate. Many thanks to Sam, our caretaker, for completing much of the work.

New Fencing - October 2019

From 22nd October we will be replacing the fencing around the grass playground in the Garden Plots area and also on the corner of the Church Hall grounds, near the Telephone Exchange access road. We would ask all Garden Plot holders to cut back any vegetation that is currently encroaching the existing fences, in preparation.

Improving Facilities - September 2019

Over the last few months we have been updating and renewing facilities in the hall. We have enhanced safety with new emergency lighting, fire alarms, RCD breakers, more sockets and outside lighting. We have installed new water heating, taps, a sink, electric cooker, new fridge and also re-arranged storage, to make better use of space. We hope you appreciate the changes, there's more to do as will continue to maintain and improve the hall into the future. If you have any ideas, let us know.

Change to Managing Trustees - December 2018

Thaxted Church Hall in Margaret Street has been an important part of the community for more than eighty years. It was in 1934 that a very generous benefactor donated land to the Vicar of Thaxted – Conrad Noel – and the Churchwardens to be held on trust for the aim of building a Church Hall. Interestingly the land included what is now Margaret Street Car Park, which was sold to Dunmow Rural District Council in 1964, and the site of the Telephone Exchange, which was sold to HM Postmaster General in 1968. Since then it has been used by many organisations and individuals in Thaxted.

For the last thirty or more years, the Trustees of the Church Hall have been David and Elisabeth Morgan, and Norma Hobbs. They have decided to stand down and hand over the responsibility of the Church Hall to new trustees. These are Fr Chris Brown, Daniel Fox, Paul Meader and Stephen Odom. Paul was appointed a trustee last year, so there will be some continuity. This change will effectively take place from 1st January 2019, though it might take a little longer to sort out all the legalities.

The new trustees would like to thank David, Elisabeth and Norma for all their hard work over many years managing and maintaining the Church Hall.

We will contact all the regular users of the hall – Beavers, Brownies, Country Dance Club, Dog Trainers, Guides, Jenny Jones Dance, Little Ladybirds, Morris Men – and the allotment holders so they know who to speak to about the hall or the allotments.

Anyone wishing to use the Church Hall can find us at www.thaxtedchurchhall.co.uk where you will find all you need to know about hiring the hall. Our email address is bookings@thaxtedchurchhall.co.uk
